They grab the lanyard, twist the card, sometimes turn it sideways, hold it up, squint, and finally get their barcode or QR code to read. Three seconds. Maybe five. You know what I mean? Here’s the thing that’ll make you rethink ID badges entirely: it’s not their scanner. It’s the badge orientation.

When a badge is worn on a lanyard around your neck, it hangs vertically. That means the card’s longest edge is top-to-bottom. If your barcode or QR code is printed horizontally (bars running side to side), then when the badge is hanging naturally, the barcode is oriented sideways relative to a standard scanner.
The scanner’s laser or camera is expecting bars that run perpendicular to its line of sight. A sideways barcode means the scanner has to work harder, often requiring the person to twist or rotate the card. That’s the source of the awkward badge flip.
Vertical badge design flips the whole thing 90 degrees. Now the card itself is tall, and your barcode and QR code run parallel to the shorter dimension, with the bars pointing up and down when the card hangs. When you hold the badge flat toward a scanner, the bars are in the sweet spot with no twisting, no flipping. It reads the first time, every time.
That’s not just a neat design trick. In a busy hospital corridor, a line of warehouse workers clocking in at shift change, or a security checkpoint at an event, that avoids a few hundred collective hours of “why won’t this thing read?” per month.
